SOLIDARITY WITH OTHER WORKERS
On Thursday January 31, the labor contract between AFSCME and the University of California
expires. AFSCME represents custodial, dining, parking control, shuttle drivers and other
workers.
On that day, AFSCME will hold a rally beginning at 3pm at the quarry
plaza/bookstore area, then marching over to Kerr Hall.
CUE members are encouraged to participate in this demonstration.
CUE begins bargaining with the University very soon, probably mid-late March. Our
issues will no likely be similar to AFSCME's: pension and health care cost protection,
the ability to move through the salary schedule based on longevity or seniority, and
others. Because of our shared issues and the fact that the University denies all
of its' unionized workers fair wages and working conditions, it's very important that
we show our support as AFSCME struggles on. They will support us in turn when our time
comes.
Please join your union officers and staff at some point during this demonstration, if
only for a short ten minute break. Given the awesome power and money the University has,
it's very important that we send the message that the workers are united, within our own
union and with other workers and unions as well.
As always, feel free to give the union office a call with any questions or concerns you may have.
In
Solidarity,
CUE Local 10
