AFSCME's Fair Contract Now! Picket

When: Thursday, Feb 28th 3:00 - 5:00 PM
Where: UCSC Baytree Bookstore

Members and allies of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3299 at the University of California are demanding a FAIR CONTRACT NOW. UC has been refusing to agree to fair market standards for the 20,000 patient care and service workers at all UC campuses and medical centers. A mediator has been brought in to the negotiations, but UC still has not budged. UC's low pay, which is below area market standards, is hurting UCSC workers and the broader Monterey Bay Community.

Please join your union officers and staff at some point during this demonstration, if only for a short ten minute break. Given the awesome power and money the University has, it's very important that we send the message that the workers are united, within our own union and with other workers and unions as well.

CUE begins bargaining with the University very soon. Our issues will likely be similar to AFSCME's: pension and health care cost protection, the ability to move through the salary schedule based on longevity or seniority, and others.  Because of our shared issues and the fact that the University denies all of its' unionized workers fair wages and working conditions, it's very important that we show our support as AFSCME struggles on. They will support us in turn when our time comes.

If you have questions or concerns, feel free to call the union office at 831-420-0258.

In Solidarity,
CUE Local 10
