RECENT COMMUNIQUES FROM YUDOF and McQUITTA
We’ve been seeing memos, options, and very scary communications from the Office of the President and UCSC’s Director of Staff Human Resources on the subject of possible wage cuts and furloughs.
CUE Local 10 is writing you to reassure you of a few things:
- ANY CHANGE TO WAGES, HOURS and CONDITIONS OF WORK MUST BE NEGOTIATED WITH CUE. It doesn’t matter what those memos say about “staff”, “represented staff”, etc. UC CANNOT SIMPLY CUT YOUR PAY OR REQUIRE YOU TO TAKE UNPAID DAYS OFF WITHOUT NEGOTIATING WITH THE UNION. This is the best reason ever to be in a labor union – you have much more protection from unilateral changes than unrepresented workers, like those reclassified to the “99” designation, or middle/upper management. UC negotiators recognize this and have said so at the CUE/UC bargaining table.
- YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO RESPOND TO ANY UC SURVEYS THAT GIVE YOU OPTIONS ABOUT HOW YOU’D LIKE TO BE ECONOMICALLY HURT. If and when CUE sends out a survey, please respond to that one.
- CUE and UC are currently at the bargaining table. It’s likely that UC will propose some form of furloughs there. The union bargaining team MUST bring that and any other proposal back to CUE members for ratification (to be voted on) before any changes can be implemented. IF YOU ARE NOT A UNION MEMBER, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO VOTE ON ANY CONTRACT CHANGES. TO EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE ON YOUR UNION CONTRACT, CONTACT THE UNION OFFICE AT 831.420.0258 TO REQUEST A UNION DESIGNATION FORM. Contact Nora Hochman, Local 10 Organizer, to verify your status. Reach her at nora@santacruzcue.org or 831.420.0258 or 831.588.4305.
NOTE: Please talk to your CUE represented co-workers in case they don't get this message, and if you can, print a copy of this message and post it on your bulletin boards. Thank you.
