Letter from a CUE Member

October 29, 2008

Dear CUE Co-Workers:

I want to share my experience with the CUE Local 10 Union. Our office was involved in a mass lay-off and transfer situation. We weren’t a big office; we had 8 women working here. Four of the eight were laid off. The other four were to be transferred to Cupertino. This was a real life changing event in the lives of each of these women. We went to CUE Local 10 immediately, even before they were informed by Labor Relations. We received their support immediately. It was such relief. They called us together and fed us and told us what they could do for us. It was amazing. Even though we have to transfer they taught us to push back and to not be bullied into situations that we would normally feel we had to do because after all the University was our Boss.

They were instrumental in seeing that one of our employees who has major health factors was accommodated and has a local place to work. They were helpful in getting an employee help from the HR department so that she was able to smoothly move into another position and the support has been amazing in helping the rest of us to look for employment and leading us to stand up and not be pushed around. They have gone to the media for us to tell our story and to the City Council on our behalf. Our experience has been a good one and we do appreciate the support given to us at this time of difficulty.

They have been a source of relief during these critical times. I know I am happy to have been helped by their services.

Sincerely,

Jacquie Mikita
