LAYOFF UPDATE #1

On Monday February 2, 2009, over 20 CUE workers met at the Union office to discuss layoffs. Workers from UNEX, originally slated for layoff, spoke to the group and shared their story about coming together as a union to fight back. They told the group they were largely successful in retaining many jobs as a result of their unity.

Union staff reviewed contract language on layoffs. An ad hoc working committee was formed to submit proposals to Labor Relations about steps that can be taken to save money, increase revenue and save jobs. The committee is comprised of a pretty good representation of departments. More committee members are welcome. The committee will be coordinated by Local 10 organizing staffer Nora Hochman.

All CUE workers are encouraged to send the union your ideas about how your department can save money and save jobs. Email your ideas and suggestions to nora@santacruzcue.org.

Union staff would like to bring the same layoff review meeting into your workplace for a quick lunch hour meeting. It will be a shorter version, but important to meet and discuss anyway. Call the union office to ask about scheduling a workplace meeting.

We must move quickly. We must be smart, studied, focused and united.

As the UNEX workers proved, when we stick together and fight back, we win.
