6/4/2008 Management tried to involve CUE workers in spying on our sisters and brothers from AFSCME and their student supporters when planning for the strike. In order to prevent AFSCME's strike from being successful, management requested that CUE workers volunteer to "observe and engage" AFSCME workers and their student supporters. Even though the strike has been postponed, we decided to show the memo sent to CUE workers by management to inform you about management true way of doing business. Below you will find management's volunteer recruitment memo. Note: CUE workers should not assist management in any way in anything having to do with AFSCME or any other union's struggle. CUE expects solidarity from AFSCME and other unions during our contract struggle, so we must end together with AFSCME during theirs. If you have been asked to volunteer for "observation" (spying) please contact CUE at 831-420-0258. From: Rafaelg Granados [mailto:rafaelg@uccp.org] Hi Every1, Rafael Granados From: Michelle Whittingham [mailto:mwhittin@ucsc.edu] Good Morning, Please send the names of staff, any conflicts during this time frame that should be avoided, and contact information (name, email, phone) to Lucy, Julie and myself just as soon as the names become available rather than waiting until you have the entire office set since she will begin building the schedule as early as today. Lucy's goal is to have a full schedule set by Friday. Lucy stated our staff will mainly be needed during peak times running between 10 am and 4 pm. However, some of our staff will likely be needed early and late as well. There will be a debrief prior to the beginning of the strike. Thank you for your timely response,CUE Local 10 response: At 10:55 AM 5/30/2008, nora@santacruzcue.org wrote: Below you will find two email messages requesting "volunteers" to observe student activities during any AFSCME actions, including strike activities. These messages were forwarded to me from members of the CUE bargaining unit. Names have been removed in order to protect them. Under no circumstances is University management permitted to solicit volunteers to act as agents of management in the "observation and engagement" of either students or other workers in the course of labor actions. CUE is demanding copies of any and all University-authored memos, emails or other documents soliciting volunteers to do this and any other similar activities. It is simply incomprehensible to us that you would encourage or permit managers to call for CUE workers to volunteer to spy on other workers and students. Doing so, under the power of authority, implies that this may be much more of an additional work order; to not volunteer could bring retribution or retaliation. Reports of such retaliation will be dealt with accordingly. If you want to spy on workers and students, do so without using CUE workers. You have plenty of high paid managers to perform this dirty work. Under no circumstances should you contact a CUE represented worker to discuss this. Please direct all communications directly to me.
